What do we know about the food that supermarkets try to sell us? However, the documentary Food inc. shows you the truth about the American food industry. We saw a part of this movie in class and it showed us the reality which is completely different from the advertising that we see on TV. My grandfather is now retired but he was 40 years long butcher. I asked him, while we were drinking some hot chocolat and eating fresh made cookies, a few things what he thinks about the Amercian food industry.
At this time it is necessary using colourings, preservatives and flavorings. When people buy their food, they want to shop once a week, at one place & the food still needs to look attractive after 5 days home refrigerator. It's also not a criminal offence, the law allows al these substances so the food doesn't expire that fast. But these supplements are unhealthy, espacially for babies.
But how do you know that your supplier was a good man?
I have had 40 years long the same supplier, even when I ran internship. He took his meat at a farmer (no mass production). But I could also see if there where to many hormones in the meat. For example, when a chicken has a well filled chest, there aren't hormones in it.
Would you participate in that industry?
No, never! I wouldn't sell something that i wouldn't eat. In my butchery I made everything as healthy as possible.
You said to me that you didn't use any colourings, preservatives and flavorings but you needed to make every day new things, isn't that a lot of work?
Yes it is, but my customers knew that I sold fresh meat so they didn't mind to wait a little bit while I made some fresh meatloaf or steak. Yes you have to work hard, but I love my job.
My grandfather also told me that he would never go to the Mc Donalds, he went once in a factory and saw terrible things. He knows to much about it to eat those things. Once an honest butcher, always a proffesional. Even now he has retired he still prepares fresh meat (without additions) for his children and grandchildren so they would be healthy for the rest of their life.
